TODAY IN BUS HISTORY

1989 - An Arab grabbed the steering wheel of an Israeli bus and crashed the bus in a ravine. The bus had been traveling along the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem highway, and the crash caused the deaths of fourteen people and injured twenty- seven others.

2005 - Four homegrown terrorists detonated four bombs, three on London Underground trains in quick succession and a fourth aboard a double-decker bus later in Tavistock Square. Fifty-six people, including the bombers, were killed in the attacks, and about 700 were injured. The explosions were caused by homemade, organic peroxide-based devices packed into rucksacks. The bombings were followed by a series of attempted attacks on 21 July.

TODAY IN BUS HISTORY

1966 - New York City's 15-cent bus and subway fare, long one of the lowest in the nation, died today. Death was attributed to a severe attack of insufficient profit. The Transit Authority increased the fare to 20 cents to meet mounting operating costs. Subway tokens will not change, but will cost the city's estimated million straphangers a nickel more as of today.

1977 - A Vermont-bound bus carrying a score of passengers was diverted from the Bronx to Kennedy International Airport yesterday by a gunman who shot and killed two hostages, wounded at least two others, rode wildly around on the runways and held off the police in a tense siege that continued until 11:33 P.M., when the gunman was captured. His 11 remaining hostages were freed unharmed, the police said.

1978 - 5 wheelchair users went to the busiest bus stop in Denver and blocked three buses, jamming the intersection for two days. The act was in protest of lack of accessibility for the disabled on city buses.

1997 - Returning from an eight-day jamboree in Medellin, Antioquia, 140 Boy Scouts between the ages of five and seventeen and their thirty adult escorts were stopped by the UC-ELN on July 5, 1997, near Yarumal. Guerrillas forced passengers to disembark, then set fire to their six buses, chartered from the Rapido Ochoa company. Most of their belongings, including clothing, were destroyed.

BUS FACT OF THE DAY

Buses were initially configured with an engine in the front and an entrance at the rear. With the transition to one-man operation, many manufacturers moved to mid or rear-engined designs, with a single door at the front, or multiple doors. The move to the low-floor design has all but eliminated the mid-engined design, although some coaches still have mid mounted engines. Front-engined buses still persist for niche markets such as American school buses, some minibuses, and buses in less developed countries, which may be derived from truck chassis, rather than purpose-built bus designs.
