Bus Stops - January 11, 2012

World ticks closer to 'Doomsday' (3news)

(The Doomsday Clock, which represents just how close the world is to a global catastrophe, has been moved closer to midnight - and no, it's not because of an apocalyptic Mayan prophecy. Yesterday the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which maintains the clock, shifted it from six to five minutes to midnight. "Despite the promise of a new spirit of international cooperation, and reductions in tensions between the United States and Russia, the Science and Security Board believes that the path toward a world free of nuclear weapons is not at all clear, and leadership is failing," the publication said.)

Report: N.Y. School Employee Faked Daughter's Death for Costa Rica Vacation (Fox News)

(A New York City school employee has lost her job over accusations she faked her daughter's death so she could take a vacation to Costa Rica. The Daily News says a school official became suspicious of the forged death certificate. A special investigator's report says it had different fonts that were misaligned. Court records show Joan Barnett pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in the case this fall. She was also fired from her job as a parent coordinator at the Manhattan High School of Hospitality Management.)

TSA defends seizure of woman's cupcake (CBS)

(The federal Transportation Security Administration is defending its decision to confiscate a frosted cupcake from a woman flying from Las Vegas' airport. The TSA says in a blog comment posted Monday that the cupcake was packed in a jar filled with icing, which is considered a gel under a policy designed to secure travelers from terrorists seeking to evade detection by using explosives made of plastics, liquids or gels.)

Snoop Dogg to W.H.: Legalize pot (Politico)

(Lots of celebrities want to meet the president and they often come with their own pet requests: Sign this or that, take a picture with my kid, how can I steal a hand towel from a White House bathroom? But Snoop Dogg wants something different. The rapper (real name: Calvin Broadus) has been a longtime advocate for the legalization of marijuana (and a frequent user of it) and spoke to Hot 99.5’s Toby Knapp about the subject and how he might convince President Barack Obama to support a change in the country’s drug laws.)

One big wish, boy blows up building (Fox Toledo)

(A 7-year-old boy from California had the opportunity to be the one to push the button and implode a massive ConAgra grain silo in Erie County. Maxwell Hinton never thought he would get a chance to play with explosives at such a young age. But on Sunday the little boy's big dream came true thanks to an organization that turns wishes into realities.)

Elin Nordegren Is Building the Same $12 Million House She Knocked Down (Gawker)

(Thanks to a million big-tittied cocktail waitresses, Elin Nordegren is rich off the millions of her ex-husband Tiger Woods. So rich that she bought a $12 million mansion just to knock it down. Now she's going to build a new house on the property. Actually, she's going to build the same exact house. TMZ has their hands on the plans for the new house Elin is going to be building on her ocean-front property in North Palm Beach, Florida. It looks very similar to the one that just got torn down. Yes, there are more bedrooms, two hot tubs, a guest house, a giant master bedroom, and a pool house, so it's not exactly the same, but, you know, very very similar.)

Baby Born With Organs Outside Body Receives Rare Surgery (ABC)

(Kelly Davis' first ultrasound results seemed to take longer than the others during the routine 12-week visit. As moms came in and out of the waiting room, elated by the first grainy images of their growing babies, Davis was anxious as she waited for the results. Finally, doctors told her the news: Baby Hayes' organs were developing on the outside of his body.)

Ga. Considers Banning Photoshopped Heads On Nude Photos (My Fox NY)

(Georgia lawmakers are considering a bill that would make it illegal to alter photo to make it appear someone's head is on a nude body unless they o-k it. Conyers Democrate Pam Dickerson filed HB 680 in December. It would make it illegal to "Photoshop" a photo and post the image online without permission.)

Woman Enraged by 'Judge Judy' Attacks Man with Hammer (My Fox NY)

(A Florida woman was being held in jail without bond Tuesday on charges that she attacked a man with a hammer because she was upset at the TV court show "Judge Judy." Police were called to the Jupiter, Fla., home of 62-year-old Janet Knowles at around 11:30am local time Sunday on a report of a domestic disturbance, The Palm Beach Post reported.)

Penis tattoo gives guy permanent erection (MSNBC)

(You’d think somebody repeatedly sticking a needle in your penis would be a little off-putting, but the 21-year-old Iranian apparently thought it would be a grand idea to have Persian script reading borow be salaamat (good luck on your journeys), and the first initial of his girlfriend’s last name (“M”) tattooed onto his little gentleman. He was left with a permanent semi-erection as a reminder of just how good the idea was. )

'Comic Book Men': Decoding AMC's Kevin Smith reality show based entirely on the press artwork (Entertainment Weekly)

(Next month will witness the debut of AMC’s first unscripted series. Comic Book Men will be set in Kevin Smith’s New Jersey comic book store, Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, and proposes to capture “all the aspects of the comic store life.” Speaking as someone who grew up digging through back issues of The Mighty Thor trying to find issues 364-366 so I could read the complete “Thor Turns Into a Frog” saga, I am desperately hoping that the show will be a fascinating and stereotype-imploding examination of comic book store culture.)

Jay & Silent Bob hit the old road (AZ Central)

(A reminder that you're old: "Clerks" came out in 1994. That was 18 years ago. Kids born then are choosing colleges, if not already attending them. And those of us who saw and loved Kevin Smith's low-fi black-and-white cult classic when it came out? We're getting old. And so are Smith and co-star Jason Mewes, who reprised their Jay and Silent Bob characters in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," "Mallrats" and other films.)

Jay and Silent Bob Get Old, Come to Phoenix Anyway (AZ Central)

(Indie cult favorite "Clerks" hit big screens in 1994, and with it came Jay and Silent Bob, two of the most recognizable characters of the decade in American pop-culture. Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes have appeared together in many projects since, reprising their roles in movies such as "Mallrats," "Chasing Amy," "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" and "Clerks II." Now 37 and 41, respectively, Mewes and Smith remain faithfully together, adapting to the times and taking their podcast, "Jay and Silent Bob Get Old," on the road, including a stop this week at Phoenix's Stand Up Live. Together they field questions, tell stories, and hang out with the audience, which is full of dedicated fans, according to Mewes.)

Kevin Smith LIVE In Movie Theaters (We Are Movie Geeks)

(Don’t miss Kevin Smith, back on the big screen, with an event like you’ve never seen!
Kevin Smith, independent film pioneer, is coming back to the big screen for a one night event on Thursday, February 2. Broadcast LIVE from the Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto, Ontario, Kevin Smith: Live From Behind Featuring “Jay and Silent Bob Get Old” will be a unique opportunity for fans all over the country to interact with Kevin Smith, ask him questions and join in on his jokes, laughter and commentary.)

Montana bus crash: 'Oh, Jesus!' someone yelled as icy slide began (LA Times)

(Doug Taylor had been sleeping fitfully as the Rimrock Stages passenger bus made its way through the early morning darkness of western Montana in freezing rain. A professional long-distance driver, Taylor always feels uneasy when a bus gets too quiet late at night. What if the driver falls asleep? Then the deep silence was broken by an exclamation from one of the other passengers: "Oh, Jesus!" The driver was struggling for control.)

2 10-year-old boys accused of sexually assaulting 8-year-old boy on Houston school bus (The Republic)

(Two 10-year-old boys have been arrested and charged with sexual assault after authorities reviewed a security videotape from a Houston school bus that they say shows the boys engaged in inappropriate activity with an 8-year-old boy, police said Tuesday. The alleged assault took place in August but the investigation took several months, with the 10-year-old boys being arrested last week on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child. All three boys are special needs students, and authorities weren't releasing their names because they are minors.)

Parents of college hazing victim sue bus company (Reuters)

(The parents of a Florida university drum major killed in a hazing incident plan to sue the company that owns the bus on which he died, they said on Tuesday. Robert and Pam Champion are filing the lawsuit against Fabulous Coach Lines to force witnesses to testify under oath about what happened to their son Robert Champion Jr. on board a chartered bus last November, according to their lawyer.)

Show your manners to pregnant ladies
(Telegraph)

(AT EIGHT months pregnant with my second child, it's not hard for me to feel like the elephant in the room. But the ability of a packed peak-hour Sydney train to ignore my supersize existence leaves me gobsmacked. All eyes are diverted from the moment those lucky seat-dwellers spy me and my belly out the window as the train pulls into my station. Newspapers, books, phones and iPads become the focus of their attention.)

Batman pays for £100,000 Wollaton Hall improvements (BBC)

(Improvements worth £100,000 were made to a stately home in Nottingham for the filming of the new Batman movie. Scenes from The Dark Knight Rises were shot at Wollaton Hall in June and July last year. Warner Brothers paid for redecorations to The Great Hall and entrance hall and re-gilded some windows at the back of the property.)

The 7 best unproduced Batman screenplays (and what happened) (IFC)

(Not every vision of The Dark Knight has seen the light of day. Here are a few Batman film projects that never got out of the Batcave, from Tim Burton’s proposed third installment to Darren Aronofsky’s much-hyped “Batman: Year One” to a Batman vs. Superman mash-up (the logo of which can be spotted amongst the post-apocalyptic NYC ruins of “I Am Legend”).)

Holy smoke! Batman and Robin costumes for newborn caped crusaders (Daily Mail)

(You're never too young to be a superhero - as along as the costume's all snuggly and comfy. It's hard to believe these sleeping beauties go beating baddies in their waking hours. But of course these is a genuine reason for these too-cute-for-words photos.)

Two drink-free days a week needed, MPs' report says (BBC)

(People should have at least two days a week completely clear of alcohol, a group of MPs says. It is one of the recommendations in a report by the Commons science and technology committee, which is calling for a review of all government guidelines on alcohol in the UK. It says there are "sufficient concerns" about the recommendations on how much people should drink.)

Food Dispute Behind Ohio Murder-Suicide (Time)

(A dispute over whether a terminally ill woman should have been given tea and toast or an orange apparently upset her husband so much that he shot and killed two of the woman's sisters and his own son before killing himself, a sheriff said Tuesday. The sick woman, Darlene Gilkey, witnessed the shootings from a hospital bed in her living room but wasn't hurt, Hocking County Sheriff Lanny North said. The 59-year-old is dying of cancer, he said.)

Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson Caught With Drugs at Same Checkpoint (Time)

(When a tour bus carrying a famous entertainer rolls into the highway checkpoint at Sierra Blanca near El Paso, Texas, take a few extra minutes to inspect it. The checkpoint’s history speaks for itself. It wasn’t just hip-hop entertainer Snoop Dogg who was arrested at the Interstate 10 checkpoint in west Texas last weekend, according to the Associated Press. The Sierra Blanca is also responsible for the arrest of Willie Nelson in November 2010.)
