First Openly Gay Woman Competes for Miss California (Huffington Post)

(Fewer things are more all-American than the Super Bowl, Fourth of July parades, and Miss America. Most of us grew up watching as these gorgeous women teetered on stage in conservative swimsuits and dazzling evening gowns. I clearly recall the interview portion, which is where you hear the contestants espouse their views about starving children or literacy or some other safe cause. I never thought I'd see the day a lesbian was in the ranks talking about human rights, marriage equality, and gay teen suicide... until Mollie Thomas.)

Man believed to be victim of serial killer John Wayne Gacy found alive (CNN)

But nine years on from their wedding, there was one major difference - this time, Anne was marrying a woman called Jayne. Bungee jump rope snaps: Watch Aussie's miracle escape from fall into crocodile-infested waters (The Mirror)

Erin Langworthy plummeted 111m from the Victoria Falls bridge, on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, on New Year’s Eve. The 22-year-old luckily survived the impact despite blacking out and was forced to swim through rapids populated with crocs – with her feet still tied.)

Insane Medical Prediction of the Day: A Raised Speed Limit Causes Obesity (Forbes)

(I do wonder sometimes whether certain researchers are quite plugged into the same universe as the rest of us. Today’s example comes from the British Medical Journal where some researchers have claimed that raising the speed limit from 70 mph to 80 mph on the motorways (something that is under discussion politically) would lead to an increase in obesity.)

The joy of Microsoft's 'avoid ghetto' GPS patent (CNET)
