Bus Stops - February 1, 2012

Would-be Jedi jailed over lightsaber attack (MSNBC)

(An Oregon judge has used his force to order a 45-day jail sentence and mental health evaluation for a would-be Jedi who attacked toy store customers with a pair of lightsabers. David Allen Canterbury, 33, told Judge Kenneth Walker that he is already seeking mental health treatment. Canterbury also apologized to his victims.)

TVA sued after banning ‘zombies,' other costumes from board meeting (AJC)

(Several people who tried to go to a Tennessee Valley Authority board meeting in costumes including Santa Claus and a pirate are suing the utility, which banned such getups after people protesting a nuclear plant dressed up as zombies. In July, the protesters in Chattanooga dressed as zombies in an effort to convince TVA officials not to re-start construction of the Bellefonte Nuclear Plant in Alabama, where work had stopped in 1988. Soon after, the utility banned costumes at its meetings in an effort to avoid disruptions.)

'Toddlers' mom sues media for sexualizing daughter (MSNBC)

(She's not sexy and she doesn't know it! That's what "Toddlers & Tiaras" pageant mom Susanna Barrett insists about her 5-year-old glam princess Isabella. Barrett claims that after a video of her little girl singing LMFAO's "I'm Sexy and I Know It" at a night spot surfaced, several media outlets tried to turn the non-sexual performance into something inappropriate, and she's suing mad.)

UFO Found In Baltic Sea? (Huffington Post)

(A team of shipwreck hunters that found a strange circular object on the floor of the Baltic Sea in 2011 now says they have discovered visual evidence of a second "disc-like shape" some 200 meters from the original find, CNN reports. Peter Lindberg, who leads the group, previously joked to CNN that the first object they found 300 feet below the surface might be an unidentified flying object.)

New Air Force One tapes give insight on Kennedy death (BBC)

(The US National Archives has released long-lost recordings of the Air Force One flight back to Washington on the day of John F Kennedy's assassination. The tapes contain 42 minutes of audio that was not included in the original public version. It includes discussion about what to do with the slain president's body and a phone call to Rose Kennedy, his mother.A team of shipwreck hunters that found a strange circular object on the floor of the Baltic Sea in 2011 now says they have discovered visual evidence of a second "disc-like shape" some 200 meters from the original find, CNN reports. Mystery Outbreak Of Tourette's At US School (Sky News)

(Pupils have been struck by a mysterious Tourette's-type illness at a school in New York, leaving doctors baffled. Up to 15 girls at Le Roy High School have developed the ailment over the past few months.
It causes twitching and uncontrollable verbal outbursts - including swearing in some cases. Doctors say the symptoms could be due to conversion disorder - once known as mass hysteria.
Even though it is a psychological condition, the symptoms are real.)

Kevin Smith talks the talk (Toronto Sun)

(An irony of Kevin Smith's career is that he is the "Silent Bob" of the Gen X slacker-movie duo Jay and Silent Bob. Ironic because Kevin Smith can talk. He can talk like Tim Tebow can pray. Like Chef Ramsay can swear. Like the Kardashians can, um, do nothing. Appropriately, Smith, who has ostensibly given up on making movies, now talks for a living.)

Kevin Smith On His Beef With The Oscars And 'Hit Somebody,' His Final Movie (Huffington Post)

(Get ready for some juicy gossip and insider tales: Kevin Smith is about to do another live Q&A session. This time around, he's expanding his audience by simulcasting it in theaters across Canada as part of an event called "Live From Behind." He and longtime friend/collaborator Jason Mewes will record their podcast "Jay and Silent Bob Get Old" live from Toronto's Scotiabank Theatre, to be followed by questions from the audience in attendance and on Twitter. Past Smith Q&As have unearthed classic stories, like what a nightmare it was when the director and Bruce Willis collaborated on "Cop Out," and what it was like for Smith to act alongside Timothy Olyphant ("Olyfantastic") in "Catch and Release.")

Kevin's Smith's Take on Prayer: He'll Still BURN IN HELL, February 11th on EPIX! (Technorati)

(Beneath all that carnivorous "I will conquer online social media platforms and devour them, fans and all," showmanship and mega promotions of his blog, podcasts, comic book store, road trips, Kev is really a sweet guy who believes in God, prays and is faithful to his family. Yes, amidst all that swearing and F#*K this and S@#T that, folks, he does pray.)

New Jersey Filmmaker Jim Riffel Raises Offer to Kevin Smith’s “Wayne Foundation” Charity (PR Web)

(“Red State” director and “Comic Men” creator Kevin Smith is still deciding on a charitable offer from a group of New Jersey-based filmmakers. But that decision may be a little easier to make once Smith learns about an incredible addition Riffel has put on the table: A “swag bag” filled with more than 20 awesome items. The original offer, explains producer Mark Zobian, is simple: “We’re going to give Kevin Smith $10,000 to donate to charity if he reviews a feature film we’ve made called “Night of the Day of the Dawn…Part 5.” Smith, who has expressed interest in the offer, would donate the money to his own charity, The Wayne Foundation. The organization, founded by Jamie Walton and Kevin Smith (Smith is Vice President) was created to end human trafficking and child slavery.)

$4.25-million lawsuit filed in bus crash death (Globe and Mail)

(Relatives of the woman who was killed in a Toronto bus crash last August have launched a $4.25-million lawsuit against the Toronto Transit Commission, two drivers and a trucking company. The claim was filed Tuesday on behalf of 43-year-old Jadranka Petrova’s husband, son and daughter. Ms. Petrova was taking the bus after booking a driver’s test on Aug. 30. It swerved and smashed into the rear of a crane truck on Lawrence Avenue East near the Don Valley Parkway, police said at the time. Ms. Petrova was killed and 13 other passengers were injured.)

Police release video of man attacking bus (Globe and Mail)

(Vancouver police fired back Monday against the civil suit launched by a man whose leg was ripped open by a service dog last summer, releasing video of the victim’s violent actions before his arrest. Downtown Eastside resident Chris Evans, 33, sued the police and the City of Vancouver after his June arrest for battering a bus’s windshield and door windows with his skateboard.)

Bus drivers banned from calling women ‘love’ (The SUN UK)

(SO, a bus company has banned its driver's from calling passengers love, darling or babe. The last two I agree with. Being called babe by anyone other than my boyfriend or TOWIE's Mark Wright is unacceptable. I hate over-familiarity as much as the next broad. I have a nice enough young chap who mows my lawn (that's not a metaphor by the way) and he used to text me "I'm at the gate babe" as if he was my lover. But the love thing is a tricky one.)

Christian Bale Brands Batman as 'Anarchist' Superhero in 'The Dark Knight Rises' (Aceshowbiz)

(Christian Bale recently discussed how he interpreted Batman in the much awaited "The Dark Knight Rises". Instead of branding the Caped Crusader as a heroic figure, the actor, who has his 38th birthday this Monday, January 30, thought that the comic hero is rather "anarchist." Speaking to Style Magazine, the Oscar winner opened up, "For me he [Batman] is an anarchist and a free spirit." He continued, "He knows that there are parallels between him and his enemies because life is never stable - you always have to fight for it. Keeping in mind that it may never be boring and that nobody is obliging you to behave like a superhero and to always have your muscles flexed and bulging." )

5 Oddly Positive Acts Done By Batman Villains (Houston Press)

(We recently did a piece on the most heartbreaking video game deaths, and looking back over that list we noticed something odd. Of the five deaths featured, two were out and out villains, one was at best neutral in a global good-vs.-evil struggle, one was a hero but part of the heartbreak was that she managed to use a villain's love for her to kill them both, and the last was more of an antihero whose actions included fratricide.)

Victim hunts down attackers on Facebook (LEP UK)

(A film producer brought the thugs who attacked and robbed him to justice after he tracked them down using Facebook. Jonathan Rawstrone, who goes by the name Jonny Raw, was beaten up in the street shortly after he had shared a drink with his attackers and thanked one of them, a soldier, for serving his country. The determined victim spent 48 hours on his computer using a combination of social network sites and information from friends in Preston to track down soldier Matthew Lakeland and Ben Craig before reporting them to detectives.)

US bars friends over Twitter joke (SUN UK)

(TWO pals were barred from entering the US after innocent tweets joking about "destroying America" were picked up by the country's anti-terror cops. US special agents monitoring Twitter spotted Leigh Van Bryan's messages weeks before he left for a holiday in Los Angeles with pal Emily Bunting.)

Sean Penn Named Ambassador for Haiti (Time)

(Actor Sean Penn has been named ambassador at large for Haiti in recognition of his humanitarian work since the 2010 earthquake. The Hollywood star received the honor from Haitiian President Michel Martelly at a special ceremony Tuesday evening at the National Palace.)
