Happy Birthday Mr. Smith: Kev News...Kev News...

The Batman boom: How Hollywood blockbuster is creating hundreds of jobs

(Filming of The Dark Knight Rises is in full swing in Pittsburgh – and the city is reeling in the economic benefits, with studio cash creating hundreds of new jobs. Money is flooding in to local businesses, which are providing some of the huge number of resources needed to make the blockbuster - from wood for the sets to accommodation for the stars and crew.)

First Look at Marion Cotillard at 'Dark Knight Rises'‎

(More new pictures from "The Dark Knight Rises" filming have arrived, giving a first look at Marion Cotillard's character in the superhero movie. She is tapped to play Miranda Tate, a board member in Wayne Enterprises, but judging from the set being prepared for her scene, rumors suggest that there is more to her character than just a board member. )

DC Comics promises to hire more women after reader backlash

(Reader outrage at the lack of female writers and characters at DC Comics has prompted the publisher to tell fans it is taking their concerns "very seriously". At Comic-Con in San Diego last month, co-publisher Dan DiDio was asked why the company had gone from 12% to 1% female creators with its "New 52" relaunch, and was told to "hire women" by a delegate. "Women are half of the world, and a significant percentage of the DC Comics character stable, and yet only 1% of their creators," said Laura Hudson at Comics Alliance. "And the way that you treat and represent half of the people in your world – and by extension, half of the people in the real world who might potentially buy your books – should be more than a marginal concern.".)

Interview With Wayne Gretzky!

(Steven Ellis had the pleasure of meeting the great one while in Edmonton yesterday. He asked him for some questions. Wayne seemed a little quiet, but he agreed.)

Blind Star Wars-mad brothers create Stormtrooper uniforms by touch

(STAR WARS-mad brothers have proved the force is with them by going about their daily business in Stormtrooper suits they painstakingly handcrafted – despite being blind.)

Southwest announces flight cuts‎

(Starting in January, Southwest Airlines is eliminating service to Philadelphia from Manchester and Providence, and reducing its service to Philadelphia from Boston. Also on Jan. 8, Manchester-Boston Regional Airport will see a new daily Southwest flight to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The airline told Boston.com the cuts, including a 25 percent reduction in daily flights between Philadelphia and Logan International Airport, is due to less demand for Philadelphia.)

Great white sharks off L.A. beaches? Yup. Now they're on TV‎

(White sharks at one of Los Angeles’ most popular surfing beaches? Yes. They’ve become such a familiar site at Sunset Beach in Pacific Palisades that regulars have become almost, kind of, sort of comfortable with their presence. Sometimes the humans don't even tell lifeguards or researchers about seeing the predators. That’s one of the revelations of “Great White Invasion,” one of several new programs debuting this week on the Discovery channel’s 24th annual “Shark Week.”.)

Earth's Little Sidekick: A Tugboat Asteroid

(There's word out of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory that astronomers have just discovered Earth's first Trojan asteroid — a rock that shares our own solar orbit, leading us around the sun like a tugboat pulling an ocean liner. That's big news not just because such an object had never been spotted before, but also because a Trojan could make such an easy and nifty place for astronauts to visit.)

The Boy Who Lived Forever

(J.K. Rowling probably isn't going to write any more Harry Potter books. That doesn't mean there won't be any more. It just means they won't be written by J.K. Rowling. Instead they'll be written by people like Racheline Maltese.)

Man pleads guilty to smuggling turtles

(A JAPANESE man has pleaded guilty to smuggling 55 live turtles and tortoises into the United States by hiding them in snack food boxes. US Federal prosecutors said in a statement that 39-year-old Atsushi Yamagami pleaded guilty today to one felony count of smuggling in a Los Angeles courtroom. Yamagami faces a maximum of 20 years in prison at his October 31 sentencing.)

Group effort helps reunite Dachshund with tourist couple‎

(Dog owners, imagine one of your worst fears come true. Your pet gets startled and breaks free from his leash and darts into traffic. That's just what was unfolding right before Joseph and Robyn Smiths' eyes three months ago. The couple from Ohio was just checking in at the Oceanfront La Quinta hotel, when a screeching car surprised their 8-month-old dachshund, Arlo. As he ran through the busy intersection he was clipped in the nose by a car. Robyn Smith said that same car "nearly hit Joseph as he was trying to catch Arlo." Scarred and injured, Arlo ran away out of sight.)
